Anna Karenina

Karelia was also chosen for filming by the famous British director Joe Wright (yhe director of Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, Hannah). The director and producers were offered a choice of several tourist places in the Russian outback - Suzdal, Yasnaya Polyana, and the outskirts of Moscow. But Wright decided to shoot Anna Karenina on Kizhi Island. It was not easy to get to the island from Petrozavodsk in winter. First, we drove to Medvezhyegorsk on a good track, then 130 km off-road to the village of Velikaya Guba. And from there, either on a hovercraft or on a snowmobile, it was possible to get to the filming location. There were huge hummocks on the lake at that time.
