The film was shot in Karelia in 2005. Directed by Pavel Lungin. It is the Karelian landscapes that give the film a special atmosphere. The main storyline of the film takes place on an island that is actually a peninsula on the White Sea coast. Filming took place in the village of Rabocheostrovsk. It is in the fishing lodge that all the important episodes in the lives of the heroes take place. The chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is also captured.
